Orlagh O’Driscall Taking the I out of your work class 18 25/03/19

In today’s class we did a writing exercise that was base around taking out the “I” from our work. It was done in attempt to bolster up our writing and make it less opinionated and more objective.

The reason for this is that when you give your opinion you in a way show your hand. You reveal the bias that is inextricably linked to ones own opinion.

It was a very beneficial class and the way in which the initial piece was framed allowed us to do the exercise very well. The rare office tumble weed was a concept that I have yet to come across before or since.

We also went through different examples of journalistic writing which were emotive descriptive but again the authors completely took themselves out of the story which is what I think the trick to this is. To show not tell to speak without putting yourself in the story.

we spoke about what do you see what do you smell what do you feel what do you hear what can you touch are you tasting something appealing to all the sentence

we spoke about the importance of the active voice and how the passive Dickensian lanfgu8age is while beautiful not as sleak and succint and to the point as the writing style of the journalist.
